PIBURGER SEE--A LAKE IN THE MOUNTAINS
  • Tip Rating:
  • We discovered that we could go swimming in a lake in the mountains. We needed a relaxing day, so we went to the PIBURGER SEE. What a treat! You probably can imagine the water was pretty cold, but actually the temperature of the water can reach 24 degrees.

    Erfurt
  • Tip Rating:
  • Erfurt is the Thuringian capital and the oldest town in the region. Its historical records date from AD 729 and a Bishopric was then founded. Erfurt was an important trading post between west and east, so the town developed quickly. It university was founded in 1392 and Martin Luther was a student there. The city is dominated by two hills. There is a huge fortress on one - the Peterberg and on the lower hill is the Dom and the St Severikirche which are both worth visiting. In the Dom is a lovely Pieta which dates from the 13th century.
The Fischmarkt is a beautiful small square with a Neo Gothic townhall(1870-1874). It is surrounded by houses dating from various periods but the loveliest (I think) are the "Zum Breiten Herd" and "Zum Roten Ochsen" they both are 16th century Renaissance. Also a must see is the "Kramerbrucke" which is a bridge dating from 1325 lined with little shops, there were originally 60 Medieval houses.

    Caprese Michalangelo
  • Tip Rating:
  • High in the Tuscan hills is the tiny little town where Michalangelo was born in 1475. In the house there is nothing original of the artist life but the church where he was baptisted is still there. The "Michelangiolesco Museum" was offically opened in 1964 on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the artists death. The museum includes the house where Michangelo was born which is 14th century, the Ciusini Palace and rooms of the "Rocca" fortress.
The drive there and just being where he was born was something I had wanted to do for years. There is multi media information in the museum but only in IItalian and when we were there it was not working but for me it was being there that was important. The gift shop has a good selection of art books.

    Orvieto
  • Tip Rating:
  • Really this is perhaps a "must see" Orvieto is situated on a 300 metre high plateau. it the centre is a lovely 13th century Duomo, building started in 1290 and it took 300 years to build. The facade is lovely, it is said to be one of Italy's greatest cathedrals. The inspriation of the cathedral was the "miracle of Bolsena" - real blood from a consecrated host fell on the altar cloth of a chruch in Bolsena. On the facade there are beautiful carvings on the base, they date from 1320-1330 and depict scenes from the Old and New Testament.

    Monteriggioni
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a beautiful Medieval hill town, it was built in 1203 and became a garrison town 10 years later. It is completely encircled with high walls and 14 fortified towers. They were built to guard the northern borders of Siena's territory from invasion by the Florentine armies. You can actually see the walls from the Colle di Val dılsa road. Inside the walls are a couple of shops, a Romanesque church and a few houses. Monteriggione impressed Dante so much he used it as a simile for the deepest abyss in his "Inferno".

    Arnstadt
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a lovely little city with a beautifully (partially) restored historic centre. There is the church where J.S.Bach had his first employment. Near the square is a square with a lovely halftimbered apotheke and a Baroque palace which is now a museum. On the square is this statue on Bach as a young man.

    Weimar
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a lovely little city with a long and important history. The small centre is easy to explore on foot. but outside of the city there are also points of interest.
The Goethe house is lovely and very interesting. The only problem is that everything, including the introduction film is only in German.
The Schiller House is also in the old centre and there is also a lovely statue of both Goethe and Schiller.
The Scloss museum was a large Ducal palace but today it houses a small but good collection of paintings. The Schloss Belvedere was built in 1724-32 as a ducal summer palace, it has been beautifully restored and has a lovely collection of china.
Not far from Weimar is Buchenwald, a German Camp between 1937-45 more than 54,000 people were murdered here. The memorial can be seen high on the hill for miles and miles. Perhaps not the mst "fun" place to visit but very interesting and very much part of our history which should not be forgotten.

    Samothraki waterfalls and plunge pools
  • Tip Rating:
  • The ice cold waters of Samothraki's many waterfall supplied cold plunge pools are invigorating and refreshing! There are many of them throughout the island, such as along the River Fonias, and near the town of Therma. Be prepared because there is often considerable hiking and rock climbing involved in getting to the various pools. Each one is so unique and lovely in its own special way... This pic shows me diving into the second plunge pool of the River Fonias...

Meiringen : Merinque & Sherlock Holmes

  • Bakerstreet 221b is in Meiringen - Europe
    Bakerstreet 221b is in
    Meiringen

Meiringen is the place where "Merinque" was created first and it is also a special place for all fans of Sherlok Holmes, who died here according to one of the books of his author.
In der very centre of Meiringen you can see the world's first authentic replica of the living-room of Sherlock Holmes in Bakerstreet 221b. This replica was made according to the exlanations, given in the books and it includes all the small details beeing mentioned there. This room is shown in a small museum that includes plenty of other interesting Holmes-souvenirs, letters that were sent from all over the world to "Sherlock Holmes, Bakerstreet, London" etc.etc.etc.
You really might get the feeling, Holmes was a real person, how else could they show his private things there...
The Sherlock Holmes Museum is open
    May-September : Tue-Sun 01.30-06.00p.m.
    October-April: 04.30-06.00p.m.
Address: CH-3860 Meiringen c/o Parkhotel du Sauvage
The Sherlock-Holmes-museum is next to Parkhotel du Sauvage inside a small wooden church.
Reichenbachfall is the big waterfall opposite of Meiringen, about 2 km to the south from the Sherlok-Holmes-museum. Conan Doyle - the author of Sherlok Holmes - was a regular guest in Meiringen and he was so very much impressed of the scenery of Reichenbachfall, that he thought, this would be the perfect place to die for his famous dedective. When you get out of the funicular you may see a yellow star at the other side of the waterfall and this indicates the place, where Sherlok Holmes had a fight with his arch-enemy Prof. Moriarty and both of them finally fell down and died.
Take a look at the Sherlok Holmnes monument at the main-square of Meiringen. The monument was made by John Doubleday in 1988 and at many places on the monument you may find engravings and marks, giving 60 hints, to solve 60 Sherlock-Holmes-cases.
Meiringen is about 10km east of Brienz or 1 hours to drive south from Luzern over the Bruenig-Pass !

    Torre del Lago Puccini
  • Tip Rating:
  • This little town was once the home of Giacomo Puccini and his wife. Their home was on the lake side and is now a museum. The compose and his wife and child are buried in the wall of the house. the house contains personal belongings of the composer and included the piano on which he composed many of the well known works. the museum is only open a few hours each day and the number of people that can go in each time is strictly limited as is the time you can wander through the house. No photos or filming is allowed but it is an interesting museum. There is a lovely statue of the composer in the square on the lake side.
